The original Wilson Stadium was constructed in 1963, and currently serves as Year-round APS District-wide Football, Track-and-Field, and Soccer facility.
A series of renovations and additions by Wright and Hammer Architects began in 2003 and initiated on-going renovations to the original structure and site which were completed in 2009. The original stadium is cast-in-place concrete and presented structural challenges imposed by both the original building design and the significant wind loads on the new Press Box constructed atop the bleachers. However, through intense design collaboration with the Structural Engineer, the dramatic design effects that the new Stadium design offers the Public were achieved with minimal expense to the project. The Wilson Stadium press box cantilevers beyond the original stadium seating with stairs to the second story camera area and coaches’ offices, and the original rectangular CMU field house was creatively ‘exploded’ into a more three-dimensional design through the use of a series of walls successively expanding in all directions around the building. |
