In 2001, Wright and Hammer Architects assisted in securing a Grant from the Ronald MacDonald House that brought “at-risk” students from Amy Biehl High School together with recovering adult residents of Villa De Paz (VDP), a transitional housing program. VDP was the last step for residents moving from homelessness into their own homes. Social services including group support sessions, life skill classes, cooking/laundry techniques, and support for family visitation and reintegration were offered; however, the space available for these activities was inadequate. Under the direction of Jamo and Denise, students worked directly with the residents to develop design concepts to meet the needs of the VDP community. The final presentation included student-produced Design Drawings and a Model of each design concept in which the students and VDP residents participated in a round-table discussion and critique of each project.
