This adobe building was originally constructed in 1938 under the W.P.A. program and served as a community center. Relatively little had been done since the building was originally built to maintain the condition of the building. The design of this facility required compliance with the State of New Mexico Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) guidelines, as well as compliance with ADA and the Governor's Committee on Concern's of the Handicapped.
New viga ends, scuppers, and wood windows and doors were constructed to match the original building. The original wood vigas which had been covered with acoustic tile in an earlier "remodel" were exposed, refinished, and enhanced by new wall sconce lighting. Boarded-up windows from an earlier "remodel" became display cases which replicated the original window design. Boarded-up doors became storage for shuffleboard equipment. Due to limited floor and ceiling space, hot water heating equipment was installed in the benches surrounding the Gym/Stage area. Vinyl tile installed to meet sanitary code requirements was designed to be reminiscent of the era of the original construction. |
