This new Multi-Purpose facility accommodates two Physical Education classes simultaneously, provides indoor performance space for plays and concerts, and serves as a link between the existing School and the south playground. The multi-functional aspect of this space required a movable stage area with storage and dressing room access directly adjacent to the stage, as well as multiple levels of lighting capability. While a general lighting system illuminates basketball court play areas, a separate lighting system serves the stage area with spot lights and dimmers controlled by a panel which works in conjunction with the public address system.
Our educational projects often afford us an opportunity not only to create, but to teach. This building was designed as a teaching tool with exposed building systems. Structural steel joists are visible throughout the building. Mechanical ducts and diffusers are marked with the direction of hot and cold air flow. Plumbing supply and waste systems are visibly exposed and graphically described behind glass windows within the walls. Electrical conduit feed and branch circuits are also exposed and graphically described behind glass windows within the walls. Sustainable daylighting concepts are employed through the use of clerestory windows/skylights, and rain harvesting concepts were designed to water planting areas. |
