Pecos Valley Medical Center
(PVMC) is a nonprofit rural medical, dental, behavioral health and urgent care
facility focusing on quality, affordable care; promoting preventative medicine
and healthy lifestyles; developing educational outreach; and ensuring community
involvement. The facility is vital to
the larger rural area, without which, access to medical services would require
transportation to Santa Fe for both routine and emergency care.
Jamo and Denise worked closely with the PVMC Board of Directors, Administration, Doctors, and Staff, to design a new multi-phased development on a steep, wooded site, suffering from extensive erosion. The initial construction phase included the culmination of years of fund-raising, as well as assistance from the USDA for a new medical facility which was completed in 2014. Phase 2 (which was schematically designed simultaneous to Phase 1) is a planned addition consisting of the dental clinic, behavioral health, and administration services, and is currently in the fund raising stages. The new facility is a coherent plan with a layout easy for patients to navigate (that includes integrally colored “arrows” in the exposed concrete flooring to assist in the direction of travel) and for staff to fully monitor from a fully-glazed central nursing station. HEPA privacy requirements have been addressed between exam rooms with sound acoustical walls and ceilings, and in the Lobby with intimate settings created by acoustical “clouds” and elegant task lighting. The exterior envelope is super-insulated and takes advantage of extensive daylighting through clerestory windows and insulated sky-roofs in the northern New Mexico colder climate. The overall effect is a bright and cheerful medical environment intended to promote patient health. The building is partially buried into the site and nestled among the trees for increased climate control. The existing storm run-off has been directed planting areas to support native landscaping. Phase 2 of the project is designed with a greywater system to provide site irrigation. |
