The original John Milne Stadium was constructed in 1938 as a WPA Project, and currently serves as Year-round APS District-wide Football, Track-and-Field, and Soccer facility.
A series of renovations and additions by Wright and Hammer Architects began in 2003 and initiated on-going renovations to the original structure and site which were completed in 2009. The original stadium is cast-in-place concrete and presented structural challenges imposed by both the original building design and the significant wind loads on the new Press Box constructed atop the bleachers. However, through intense design collaboration with the Structural Engineer, the dramatic design effects that the new Stadium design offers the Public were achieved with minimal expense to the project. The curved and cantilevered tensile-like canopies on the field house create a dramatic entry for football teams running from the locker rooms and onto the field, and the high-tech curved steel structures of the new additions are an elegant contrast to the austere concrete backdrop of the original stadium structure, both complimenting and highlighting the historic WPA era in our history. |
