Silver City was founded as a mining town in the summer of 1870 after the discovery of silver ore deposits in the nearby hills. Today, Silver City is home to many musicians and artists and has a thriving downtown arts district. Jamo and Denise worked with the nonprofit Corporation for Downtown Development in Silver City and NM Mainstreet to design both the Historic Downtown Silver City Gateway Arch into the historic downtown district, and the Market Plaza on Big Ditch Park.
Historic Downtown Silver City Gateway Arch: The Historic Downtown Silver City Gateway Arch was designed as a gateway into the historic community. The design incorporates existing historic materials alongside contemporary installations by local artists. The arch is supported by two twenty-foot high columns mounted on tiled concrete pedestals. Each column is constructed using four individual footed light posts salvaged from the historic downtown area. Each distinct tile piece was designed and fabricated by the artists to reflect the history of Silver City. Market Plaza on Big Ditch Park: During the night of July 21, 1895, a heavy wall of water washed out Main Street in downtown Silver City. The resulting destruction left a ditch 55 feet lower than the original street level were Main Street once stood. The ditch remains to this day and the Big Ditch Park has become a celebrated part of Silver City history. Jamo and Design designed a Master Site Plan for the development of the Market Plaza on Big Ditch Park that is currently home to the Silver City Farmers' Market and hosts weekly live entertainment, artist demonstrations and special events like the Salsa Contest and the Apple Festival. |
