Amy Biehl High School is an educational facility for high school students. The design includes 16 regular classrooms, Art and Architecture studios, Computer classrooms, Vocational studios for Bike Repair, Woodworking, and Auto Mechanics, a Theater Performance space, and Community Orchard and Gardens. The project is located at the east end of Phil Chacon Park in the Trumbull Neighborhood. Caesar Chavez Community Center is located at the southwest corner of the Park, and the school is designed to integrate many of its programs into the community through shared use with both the Park and the Community Center.
Parallel to the design of this project, Jamo and Denise developed and taught an eight month class to ninth grade students at Amy Biehl. The objective was to allow the students to directly participate in the design of their new school by developing questionnaires, and interviewing fellow students, teachers, Neighborhood Associations and community members; conducting site visits to verify existing grades, and photographing existing site conditions; touring similar school facilities in the district; and studying two and three dimensional design principles, as well as architectural presentation and drafting skills. |
