Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless (AHCH) is a nonprofit dedicated exclusively to providing health care services to homeless men, women, and children. By addressing the health-related causes of homelessness, AHCH makes it possible for people to find solutions to end their homelessness.
Our continuous relationship with AHCH dates back to 1993, when Jamo and Denise began to provide architectural services for planning and grants to expand the downtown 6th Street facility. In 1997, we had the opportunity to assist AHCH in relocating and consolidating the organization’s numerous homelessness services scattered throughout the City, onto a single site. The original project incorporated a new 8000 square foot Medical Clinic Building, and the renovation of two existing buildings on the site for a Dental Clinic, Artstreet Art Therapy program, Substance Abuse Recovery, and Mental Health program. The project has been designed around a central entry court and utilizes a Northern New Mexico Residential Style Portal with decorative column capitals to link the three buildings together as a single complex. The Medical Clinic is designed with a central clerestory entry space which extends to become a front porch. The detailing of this project is very important in that the design intent has been to provide a more residential environment for the homeless population. |
